Washoe Tribe takes teens on 'extreme' challenge

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is taking its youth on a yearlong "extreme" challenge that emphasizes tribal traditions.

The first major event of the "Native Extreme Teen Challenge" was a 14-mile walk from Carson City to Lake Tahoe. Over two days, more than 100 youth and adults traced a path their ancestors used to get to the lake.

The program continues this summer as the tribe emphasizes more traditions like archery and rafting. Throughout the school year, Washoe youth will learn outdoor survival skills in preparation for a five-day stay in the wilderness next summer.

This is the first year of the Native Extreme Teen Challenge. It was started in response to concerns about drug use among youth. Adults said health of their children was a top priority.
