U-M Indian health center to lose federal funds

The Center of American Indian and Minority Health at the University of Minnesota is losing $1.1 million in federal funds.

The center helps recruit youth Indian students into careers in medicine. Federal funds account for 83 percent of its budget.

Jean Howell, a member of the Cherokee Nation who is finishing his first year at the U-M medical school, said the cut will hurt the center. Among other initiatives, the center hosts an annual summer program that introduces Indian middle, high school and college to medicine.
