Oglala Sioux Tribe terminates veteran police chief

The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is looking for a new police chief after firing Ron Duke, a 23-year veteran of the Pine Ridge police force.

Duke was serving as chief in 2003 when the tribe agreed to a Bureau of Indian Affairs takeover. The agreement expired in October 2005 and Duke resumed his prior duties.

But the tribal council has since voted to advertise for a new police chief. Duke was fired on May 31.

"We were really on the verge of making this department something to be proud of," he told The Rapid City Journal.
