Hundreds mourn loss of recent high school graduate

Nearly 1,000 people attended the funeral of Navajo teen Brooke Spencer, a recent high school graduate and star basketball player who was murdered in New Mexico.

Spencer, 18, helped lead the Gallup High School's Lady Bengals to a state championship title. "She fulfilled her dream, her goal, and she had the time of her life," said cousin Kiyoko Patterson, The Gallup Independent.

Spencer planned to attend college in the fall to study nursing and had received scholarship offers from at least two schools. But last Wednesday, June 7, she was stabbed to death, allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend who is in federal custody and is awaiting charges. The incident occurred on the Navajo Nation.

Gallup High School plans to retire Spencer's jersey number, 41, at a special ceremony in the fall.
