Janine Pease, a member of the Crow Tribe, is not the first Native American appointed to the Montana Board of Regents.
The Billings Gazette said Colleen Conroy, also Crow, was appointed in 1993 by former governor Marc Racicot (R). She resigned due to illness.
Pease was appointed by Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D), who said he believed she was the first Native appointed to the board. There may have been at least one other besides Pease and Conroy.
