Members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Phoenix are seeking permission to wear eagle feathers when they graduate from Westwood High School on Thursday.
Molly Sanchez, 18, and about a dozen other seniors say wearing the feathers is an important sign. Graduating from high school is a big accomplishment, and I just feel its right for me to wear one, she told The East Valley Tribune.
The students, however, were told they couldn't wear the feathers. The tribe is meeting with the school to discuss the issue.
Nearly half of the students at the school are Native, most from Salt River.
