The Elem Indian Colony in California says a recommendation to place Rattlesnake Island on the list of National Register of Historic Places is a step in the right direction.

The island is part of the tribe's ancestral territory. An archaeologist found evidence of Elem occupation dating back 11,000 years. The tribe has an island-based culture and history.

The California State Historical Resources Commission voted unanimously to nominate the island for the list. A man who bought the island in 2004 has to agree before any placement.
