Theodore J. Hogan, a former official of the Crow Tribe of Montana, has been indicted for making false statements.
Hogan, also known by the name Kills in the Fog, previously served as tribal secretary. More recently, he was hired as a consultant to help bring mineral development to the reservation.
The tribe terminated its relationship with Hogan after people complained that he conned them out of money. An Oregon family said he stole $402,000 and a Virginia woman said he took $66,000 from her.
Hogan is based in Sedona, Arizona, where he participates in New Age-like events and offers to hold ceremonies for non-Indians.
