Red Lake Nation celebrates revival of walleye

The Red Lake Nation in Minnesota is celebrating the revival of the walleye.

The walleye was nearly decimated, forcing the tribe to close down the Red Lake fishery nine years ago. But earlier this month, the tribe reopened the waters to fishing, two years ahead of schedule.

This is a positive note for the Red Lake nation, said Bill May, who sits on the fishery board, the Associated Press reported. Were talking about a way of life. My father and several other peoples fathers lived off the resources of this nation.

The tribe is still weighing commercial fishing. Non-Indians are closely watching developments in hopes of the economic benefits.
