The Bureau of Indian Affairs has updated its driving policy after some employees were involved in serious and deadly accidents.

The policy requires employees to prove they have a clean record. It revokes the driving privileges of any employee who is arrested for reckless driving or for driving under the influence.

BIA superiors can be held liable if they allow subordinates to drive without meeting the qualifications, the policy states.

The BIA recently paid $2 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit. A former employee who was drinking on the job caused a crash that killed four people in New Mexico.
