The United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, North Dakota, is bestowing degrees on 90 students today.
One of the graduates is Terry Medicine Crow, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. He paid for his education by serving in the military and hopes to be a role model for young Natives.
"I came back to school to be an example to the younger generation for the tribe," Medicine Crow told The Bismarck Tribune. "I like to be a role model."
This year, Medicine Crow was named Student of the Year by the American Indian College Fund.
He plans to continue his education at Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas.
