Gathering of Nations Powwow kicks off in Albuquerque

The 23rd annual Gathering of Nations Powwow, the largest powwow in North America, kicked off Thursday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

More than 150,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event. Over 3,000 dancers and dozens of drum groups will participate, with some competing for prizes.

The first round of the Miss Indian World pageant was held last night. The winner will be announced on Saturday night.

The first grand entry occurs tonight at 7pm. The Indian Traders Market, featuring over 800 artists, opens today.

Reach the Rez, the tour organized by Litefoot, is also bringing its show to the powwow. Red Earth, Native Roots and other groups are slated to perform.
