Entire staff of historic Lower Sioux Agency resigns

The entire staff at the Lower Sioux Agency Historic Site in Minnesota resigned amid a dispute over the portrayal of American Indians.

In a letter, the six staffers said the Minnesota Historical Society is making poor decisions about the site. Their resignation came last Thursday, the day of a discussion of the presentation of the site to the public.

The agency was the site of the first battle the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War. It was created after treaties significantly reduced the Dakota homeland.

The state threatened to close the site due to budget shortfalls. But lawmakers and local officials wouldn't approve a deal to transfer the property to the Lower Sioux Tribe.
