A Republican candidate for Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District says the federal government needs to re-examine its relationship with tribal nations.

State Rep. Fred Morgan spoke to members of the Oklahoma Conservative Political Action Committee. He said tribes are hiding behind sovereignty to keep from opening their books to the public.

"We have to look at that, whether or not we continue to do that and whether or not we're going to have agreements between two nations that do not allow for auditing and verification," he said, The Oklahoman reported. "It's like a treaty between two nations -- you should still be able to verify."

Morgan can't seek re-election in the state due to term limits.
