The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in New York has been awarded a $263,000 grant by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to combat drug trafficking on the Akwesasne Reservation.

The tribe's 15-member police department spends nearly half of its time on border enforcement. During the winter months, when drug trafficking is at its highest, the department spends 80 percent of its time protecting the border.

The tribe was recently the focus of a New York Times article about drug trafficking in Indian Country. The tribe said the article unfairly portrayed the reservation, which sits along 12 miles of the U.S.-Canada border, as a haven for smugglers.
