A 3-mile portion of the major highway in northern New Mexico might be named after Jacob Viarrial, the late governor of Pojoaque Pueblo.
The portion of U.S. 84/285 that runs through Pojoaque Pueblo will be named "Jacob Viarrial Memorial Highway" if the State Transportation Commission votes in favor on March 17.
Viarrial was elected governor of his tribe in 1978 and served for 22 years. A Vietnam vet, he passed away in June 2004 at the age of 5.
