The Unalachtigo Band of the Nanticoke-Lenni Lenape Nation of New Jersey, an unrecognized group, has hired a law firm to fight its land claim in federal law.
The Unalachtigo Band is claiming ownership of the 3,000-acre Brotherton Reservation. The lawsuit claims the land was stolen in 1801.
The Unalachtigo Band previously sued in state court over the land but was rejected. State lawyers say the federal claim should be dismissed due to lack of federal recognition.
