The Blackfeet Nation of Montana has closed a landfill that operated on the reservation for 30 years.

The tribe agreed to replace the dump back in 1997 but high costs and regulatory hurdles prompted the tribe to go with a transfer station instead. All reservation garbage will now be shuffled to the station before it is trucked to another landfill.

Other communities have faced similar problems with their landfills. Many use transfer stations before hauling garbage to regional dumps.

The old dump will require a three-year cleanup costing $1.2 million, the tribe estimates.
