Cherokee Nation donates $2.3M to public schools

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma donated more than $2.3 million to public school in the tribe's 14-county jurisdictional area.

The tribe is fulfilling a promise to share revenues from the sale of its car tags. Since the car tag program started three years ago, the tribe has donated over $6 million to the schools, Principal Chief Chad Smith said.

About 100 school districts are receiving the money, which they can use how they see fit.
