Lawrence H. Summers, a former Clinton administration official who was a named defendant in the Cobell trust fund lawsuit, announced his resignation from Harvard University on Tuesday.
Summers faced criticism for suggesting in a speech that women lacked "intrinsic aptitude" to succeed in math and science. In another speech, he called the deaths of millions of Native Americans a "coincidence" and "Nobody's plan." He later announced a plan to recruit more women and minorities to the school.
Summers was the head of the Treasury Department during the last two years of the Clinton administration. That was when the government unsuccessfully challenged the right of Indian account holders to seek an accounting of their trust funds.
