Alaska Native leaders are opposing new hunting rules passed by the state Board of Game.
The board voted 4-3 last month to eliminate most forms of proxy hunting. The practice allows people to hunt on behalf of disabled residents and senior citizens over the age of 65.
Alaska Native elders depend on proxy hunting to survive, Native leaders say. They say the board's new rule, scheduled to go in effect June 1, will hurt people who aren't breaking the law.
The board members who voted for the rules say some urban hunters are abusing the proxy hunting program.
