A judge in Regina, Saskatchewan, found Dawn Schoenthal guilty of criminal negligence for the causing the death of her 21-month-old son on the Gordon First Nation.

Schoenthal, 27, had denied harming Samuel Schoenthal-McNab. But two witnesses testified they saw her shake Samuel violently at a home on the reserve.

Schoenthal acknowledged that Samuel had been sick in the days preceding his death in March 2003 but that she sought medical help. He had been diagnosed with the flu before being taken home.

The judge will sentence Schoenthal on April 13.
