Navajo woman boxes in Armed Forces championship

Sonia Deputee, a member of the Navajo Nation, is making history tonight when she steps into the ring at the Armed Forces Boxing Championships.

Deputee is the first Native American to box for the Navy. She is only the second woman to be included on the Navy's team.

Deputee grew up on the Navajo Nation in Monument Valley. "We used our imaginations a lot, playing with rocks and sticks and pretending they were something," she told The Ventura County Star.

She joined the Navy after three years of college. While on duty in Greece, she began to learn how to box. She jumped at the chance to box for the Navy, which offered spots to women for the first time this year.

The championship fights are taking place at the Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme in California.
