Chippewa Cree Tribe considers own energy company

Leaders of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana are working on creating a tribal energy company.

Attorney Dan Belcourt said the company would allow the tribe to earn more from its natural resources. Currently, the tribe only collects royalties from oil and gas companies that drill on the Rocky Boy's Reservation.

The tribe is already planning on opening an ethanol plant. The proposed energy company could supply gas to the plant, Tony Belcourt, the director of Chippewa Cree Tribal Energy and a former council member, said.
