Hoop Dance competition draws big crowd at the Heard

Nearly 5,000 people attended the 16th annual World Championship Hoop Dance at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, The Arizona Republic reported.

Dancers as young as 2 and as old as 70 competed for prizes in the annual tournament. Some of the younger dancers incorporated breakdance, hip-hop and modern moves in their routines, to the appreciation of the crowd and even the traditionalists.

"Indian dancing is coming back, it's going down to the kids and that's good," Tommy Draper, a 60-year-old Navajo from New Mexico, told The Republic.

Dallas Arcand, a Cree from Alberta, Canada, won the world championship in the adult division. The 27-year-old dancer also goes by the name Kray-Z-Kree and will be releasing his debut hip-hop album this spring.
