Carrie Sahmaunt, the oldest member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, died on January 15. She was 101.
Sahmaunt was a leader of the United Methodist Church near Lawton. "She was a religious person, but also very traditional," Kiowa spokeswoman Martha Koomsa-Perez told the Native American Times.
Sahmaunt's Kiowa name was "Tsat-Mah," meaning "Door Woman." She was one of the few remaining tribal members to speak the language fluently. She had 10 children, 28 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
