Ramapough Tribe sues Ford over toxic dumping

The Ramapough Tribe of New Jersey and its neighbors filed suit against the Ford Motor Company's on Wednesday, accusing the company of dumping thousands of tons of paint sludge and other toxic material at a former assembly plant.

The tribe blames numerous health and environmental problems on the dump. Leukemia rates in the area are twice the statewide average, a lawyer for the tribe and the residents said.

Ford has spent $2.5 million to clean up the site but more contaminants have been found. The company is preparing for yet another cleanup.

The Ramapough Tribe is not federally recognized. The tribe sought recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs but was denied.
