Burial grounds in downtown Miami called unique

Archaeologists in Florida are taking great interest in two burial sites being excavated in downtown Miami.

Hundreds of remains have been found at one site, with some of the bones piled in limestone fissures and layered in limestone boxes. Archaeologists say they have never seen anything similar in the entire state. The remains are about 500 years old.

The other site dates back 2,000 years. This cemetery is much smaller and the remains were buried in a different method.

Both burial grounds were uncovered during construction projects. The Seminole Tribe and the Miccosukee Tribe are being consulted about the protection of the sites.
