Pablita Velarde, a famous painter from Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico, died on Tuesday. She was 87.
Velarde, who painted scenes of traditional Pueblo life, was considered a trailblazer, particularly for Native women artists. "Painting was not considered women's work in my time," she told a public television station in 1979. "A woman was supposed to be just a woman, like a housewife and a mother and chief cook. Those were things I wasn't interested in."
A memorial service for Velarde will take place at Ventana Fine Art at 400 Canyon Road in Santa Fe from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, January 21.
