A record number of Northern Cheyenne youth are participating in the annual Fort Robinson Outbreak Spiritual Run, which commemorates an escape by tribal ancestors from an Army prison.
The 400-mile run is held every January on the anniversary of the January 9, 1879, breakout from Fort Robinson in Nebraska. Tribal leaders say it helps instill pride in youth.
The youngest participants are Brandi Nightwalker, 7, and Dornie American Horse, 10. They are among the 120 people on the run this year.
