Beatrice Medicine, scholar and advocate, dies


Beatrice Medicine, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, died December during emergency surgery. She was 82.

Medicine was a noted author, scholar and advocate for Native rights. She taught at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. She wrote two books about Indian woman and had her writings published by the University of Illinois Press.

No services will be held at Medicine's request. Medicine's family asks that donations in lieu of flowers be made to American Indian College Fund, 8333 Greenwood Boulevard, Denver CO 80221.
