Skateboarding popular among Indian Country youth

Skateboarding has become a popular sport for Native youth on reservations across Indian Country.

The trend has prompted tribes to join in. According to The Arizona Republic, the Navajo Nation, the San Carlos Apache Tribe of Arizona, the Cheyenne Rive Sioux Tribe of South Dakota and some Pueblo tribes in New Mexico have built skate parks to cater to their youth.

Tribes are also sponsoring skate contests at pow-wows, fairs and rodeos. Two contests held by the Navajo Nation this year each drew nearly 100 skaters., a new web site, caters to skateboarding, snowboarding and other sports.
