Samson Cree Nation loses trust mismanagement case

A judge in Canada has thrown out the trust mismanagement case filed by the Samson Cree Nation of Alberta.

The Samson Cree claimed that the Canadian government squandered $1.4 billion in oil and gas royalties. But the judge said the tribe isn't entitled to seek damages because federal law doesn't dictate how the government is to manage trust assets.

The ruling came hours after the Samson Cree rejected a settlement offer from the government. According to news reports, the tribe was offered $196 million.

The Samson Cree are still due to receive $360 million under an earlier ruling from the judge.
