Irene Folstrom, a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, is seeking to become the first female American Indian legislator in Minnesota.
Folstrom, 30, returned to the Leech Lake Reservation after working for the National Congress of American Indians. At NCAI, she coordinated the Native Vote 2004 campaign, which led to a record number of Indian voters in the 2004 elections.
Folstrom is now focusing on local issues. She is running as a Democrat for a district that includes the reservation. If elected, she would be the first Indian lawmaker in about a decade.
