Mohawk members file suit over chemical dumping

Forty members of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York filed suit against Alcoa and General Motors Corporation, accusing the companies of polluting the Saint Lawrence River.

The tribal members say chemical dumping by the companies has contaminated fish and caused health problems like birth defects, learning disabilities, reproductive abnormalities and certain cancers. They are asking for $5 million in damages.

General Motors and Alcoa operate facilities in Massena, up the river from the Akwesasne Reservation.
