First Peoples Fund to honor four Native artists


The First Peoples Fund will honor four Native artists at an awards ceremony in Rapid City, South Dakota, this Saturday.

Each of the artists will receive the Community Spirit Award. The award comes with a $5,000 fellowship.

Nellie Two Bulls, a 79-year-old Oglala Lakota grandmother from the Pine Ridge Reservation, is being recognized for her storytelling and for her efforts to preserve Lakota language and culture.

Lois Chichinoff Thadei, an Aleut whose family is from Alaska, is being honored for her weaving and printmaking.

Apolonia Susana Santos, a Tygh-Yakama from Oregon, is a painter and sculptor who has fought for fishing rights.

David Moses Bridges, a Passamaquoddy/Wabanaki from Maine, will receive the award for birch-bark canoes and baskets.
