The Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana is earning awards for improved services at the Chitimacha Health Care Clinic.
Since the hiring of Dr. Indira Gautam as the primary physician three years ago, the clinic has won nine awards from the Indian Health Service. Screenings for diabetes, tobacco, mammograms and domestic violence have gone up. Testing for other health problems has improved as well.
The clinic originally served tribal members but is now open to all reservation residents, tribal employees and residents of a nearby town.
