Vice President Dick Cheney's top aide, I. Lewis Libby, was indicted today on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury in the CIA leak probe [PDF: US v. Libby].
Libby also resigned his post in the White House today.
President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, is said to have escaped an indictment but remains in legal jeopardy, according to news reports.
Libby and Rove are key players in a case that is linked to the Bush administration's rationale for the war in Iraq.
For the past 22 months, Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald has been investigating whether government officials and/or employees leaked the identity of a covert CIA agent in violation of federal law. He is holding a press conference at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., at 2pm.
