Renovation at DOI worries some employees

A group of Interior Department employees has raised environmental, health and safety concerns about a $220 million renovation of the main building in Washington, D.C., Stephen Barr of The Washington Post reports in his "Federal Diary" column.

The employees say "strong hazardous chemical odors, welding fumes, soot, and other by-products" of the renovation are making the building at 1849 C Street NW unsafe. They say employees, and some visitors, are becoming ill due to the work.

The building houses the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Office of Special Trustee and other agencies and offices.
