The Bureau of Indian Affairs, in cooperation with the Eastern Shoshone Tribe, the Northern
Arapaho Tribe, the Bureau of Land Management and the Environmental
Protection Agency, is preparing an environmental impact statement on proposed gas drilling on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming.
A notice published in the Federal Register today states that the BIA is preparing the statement
in order to "to meet the tribes' need to maximize their economic benefit from this trust resource." The proposal calls for up to 336 coalbed natural gas and 20 conventional gas wells to be drilling over the next 10 years.
Written comments are being accepted until October 28, 2005. A public scoping meeting will be held October 12, 2005.
