The United Auburn Indian Community of California is negotiating to protect sensitive land from development.
Clover Valley Partners wants to use 622 acres to build homes. But the tribe doesn't want sacred sites and artifacts destroyed.
The tribe previously talked about buying the land but the price kept going up, The Sacramento Business Journal reported. The price was recently put at $90 million.
The two sides are keeping quiet about their latest negotiations the paper said a deal would involve the tribe's purchase of some of the land.
