A hearing to remove three leaders, including the chairman, of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe turned into a shouting and cursing match on Friday morning, The Bemidji Pioneer reported.
The hearing lasted only 12 minutes after a dispute erupted between Chairman George Goggleye and Secretary-Treasurer Arthur "Archie" LaRose. LaRose said Goggleye couldn't run the meeting because he was charged with malfeasance. Some people began shouting to support LaRose, the paper said.
Goggleye called for a vote on two council members who were targeted with dismissal. The vote was 4-1. Tribal police then had to break up a struggle between LaRose and another council member as the charges against Goggleye were being read. Goggleye called another vote, which was 4-1 against removing him.
