Deal reached to clean up dump on Indian allotment

A deal has been reached to clean up a dump on an Indian allotment in Washington.

The dump has posed an environmental and safety hazard to the Nooksack River. But since it is located on an allotment that is not within the boundaries of a reservation, there were questions on who had authority to clean up the site.

An agreement between the 75 owners of the land, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Nooksack Tribe resolves those doubts. The first task is to protect the river and then to clean up the site.
