Taos Pueblo of New Mexico celebrated the historic return of the sacred Blue Lake on Saturday night.
The tribe's dedication in seeing the return of the lake was recognized by Americans for Indian Opportunity. The group presented the tribe with its Spirit of Indigeneity award, which will now be known as the Taos Pueblo Blue Lake Spirit of Indigeneity award.
On hand for the ceremony was a delegation of Maoris from New Zealand. The Maoris hope to reclaim a sacred area that was taken by the government.
