Grand Traverse Band, county meet for first time

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians met with the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners for an official joint session for the first time in history.

The tribe and the county discussed a wide range of topics, The Leelanau Enterprise reported. The two sides were once at odds over land and sovereignty issues

The Grand Traverse Band celebrated 25 years of federal recognition this year. The tribe gained recognition on May 27, 1980, the first under the Bureau of Indian Affairs regulations.
