Taiwan's premier announces he is part Native

The premier of Taiwan said on Monday that his great-grandmother was Native.

Premier Frank Hsieh said he didn't know what tribe he is from. He appeared at a press conference wearing the traditional dress of the Tsou Tribe and was given a Tsou name.

Hsieh made the announcement to declare August 1 as Indigenous People's Re-designation Day. The event commemorates August 1, 1994, the day the government formally referred to Native peoples as "indigenous" rather than the negative "mountain people" term previously used.
