A small tribe in the Sonoran Desert of Mexico fears a new highway could lead to even further destruction of its way of life.
The Seri Tribe lives in two main villages along the Sonoran coast. The 375-mile highway would run straight through the area, bringing tourists and other elements that could hurt tribal culture.
The tribe is negotiating with officials in the state of Sonora to move the highway away from he villages. But some armed conflicts have erupted recently. When a group of armed officers entered one of the Seri villages last March, one was killed. A pilot for the government was shot in the leg when he flew over the village.
