Tulalip Tribes want work at state park halted

The Tulalip Tribes asked the state of Washington on Wednesday to halt work at the new Cama Beach State Park so the tribe can buy the land and preserve it.

The tribe says the park was a Tulalip village occupied 2,000 years ago. Excavation of the site has uncovered at least four ancestors and artifacts, Chairman Stanley Jones Sr. said in a letter.

The state plans to spend $10 million on renovations at the park, due to open next spring. The tribe says the land should remain largely undeveloped, except perhaps for a cultural or interpretive center.
