Native woman's DNA matches 1,000-year-old ancestor

A California Native woman's DNA is an exact match to a 1,000-year-old ancestor, Discovery News reports.

Donna Yocum's mitochondrial DNA was compared to mtDNA from a person uncovered at a burial site near the city of Palmdale. It was a perfect match, according to researchers from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Yocum's aunt, who has passed away, also was a match. Yocum is a member of the San Fernando Band of Mission Indian, an unrecognized tribe.
