Montana tribe, state suspend draft water agreement

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the Montana Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes announced on Monday they have dropped talks over an interim water agreement in order to focus on a permanent water compact.

The two parties said they couldn't resolve legal issues surrounding the interim agreement. So they plan to "revitalize their efforts" for a final deal to cover water use on the Flathead Reservation.

The state has reached water rights deals with other tribes.
